Top academic writing companies: 10 checks before you pay

How to tell a legitimate academic writing support service from an essay mill — the ten checks that matter, the red flags, what it should cost, and the questions to ask before you pay.

Four connected ivory platforms hold a brief folder, glass lens, joined modules and delivery folio.
In short

The best academic writing companies keep you the author. They offer editing, tutoring, statistics and supervision-style feedback — never finished work to submit as your own, which is misconduct everywhere and a criminal offence for providers in England, Australia and Ireland. Look for a written integrity policy, named experts, a fixed written quote and real independent reviews.

Search for the top academic writing companies and you will find lists of services that look almost identical: the same promises of fast turnaround, native writers and guaranteed grades. The differences that matter are not on those lists — they are in what the service actually does with your work, and what happens to you if it goes wrong.

This guide gives you the ten checks to run on any service before you pay, including us.

What does an academic writing company actually do?

The phrase covers two very different businesses. One helps you produce better work yourself — feedback, editing, coaching, statistical analysis you understand. The other sells finished work for you to submit under your name. The second is called contract cheating, and it is the one most "top 10" lists quietly advertise.

Kind of help What you get Allowed by universities?
Proofreading and editingCorrections to language, clarity and consistency in your own textUsually yes, within the institution's proofreading policy
Tutoring and supervision-style feedbackExplanations, structure and comments on your draftsYes
Statistics and data analysis supportAnalysis run and explained, so you can report and defend itUsually yes — often expected to be acknowledged
Research methodology guidanceHelp choosing and justifying a design and analysis planYes
Ghostwriting / essay millsA finished essay, assignment or dissertation to submit as yoursNo — misconduct everywhere, and illegal to provide in several countries

Are academic writing services legal?

Legitimate support — editing, tutoring, statistical consultancy — is legal everywhere and permitted by most institutions. Selling work for students to submit as their own is not: England (Skills and Post-16 Education Act 2022), Australia (the TEQSA Amendment Act 2020) and Ireland (2019) have made it an offence to provide or advertise those services.

For a student the risk is academic: a misconduct finding can mean a failed module, a withdrawn degree or, for international students, visa consequences. That risk sits with you, not with the company.

The 10 checks to run before you choose

  1. You stay the author. The service improves, explains or analyses your work — it never writes work for you to submit.
  2. There is a written integrity policy that says plainly what they refuse to do.
  3. The people are named and qualified in your subject, and you can ask who will work on your project.
  4. You get a fixed quote for an agreed scope, in writing, before you pay anything.
  5. Turnaround, revisions and what counts as "in scope" are written down, not promised in a chat.
  6. Confidentiality is real: your files are not reused, resold or shared, and there is a privacy policy.
  7. Reviews exist on independent platforms such as Google or Trustpilot — not only on their own website.
  8. It is a real business you can contact: an address, a phone number, people who answer.
  9. It never guarantees grades, and never claims work is "undetectable" by similarity or AI checkers.
  10. Deliverables come with explanations, so you can defend the work in a viva or a supervisor meeting.

Which red flags mean you should walk away?

  • A price per page or per 1,000 words for writing, with a delivery date and no discussion of your role.
  • "Guaranteed A grade", "100% plagiarism-free guarantee" or "passes AI detection" in the marketing.
  • Requests for your university login, your student portal or your exam access.
  • No named people, no address, and a contact route that is only a chat widget.
  • Reviews that appear only on the company's own site, all five stars, all in the same style.
  • Pressure to pay before the scope is agreed, or new charges after it is.

How much does academic writing help cost?

Legitimate support is priced by scope, not by pages written: how much material there is, the level, the technical depth (a structural equation model takes longer than a proofread) and the deadline. Expect to describe your project and receive a quote, rather than pick a price from a menu.

Very low per-page prices for "writing" are usually the clearest sign of an essay mill — the work is produced to a template, and the hidden cost is the risk you carry.

How do you compare the companies on your shortlist?

Ask them A good answer
What exactly will you do with my work?A specific scope: what they change, what they explain, what stays yours
Who will work on it, and what is their background?A named person with relevant qualifications or experience
What will it cost in total? One fixed figure in writing, before payment
What do you refuse to do?A clear list — and a link to their integrity policy
What happens if something is wrong?Written revision terms, without argument over genuine errors
Where can I read reviews? An independent platform, with mixed and specific reviews

Run the same checks on every service — the cheapest answer is rarely the best one, and a service that will not answer these questions in writing has answered them anyway.

Where does ScholarCraft fit?

We are a consultancy, not an academic writing agency: supervision-style guidance on dissertations and theses, statistical analysis with the reasoning explained, literature review and methodology support, referencing and structural feedback. You keep ownership of the work and the understanding.

Measured against the checks above: every project gets a fixed quote agreed in writing before work starts, a reference number and one point of contact; our integrity policy lists what we refuse — writing work to be submitted as yours, sitting exams, guaranteeing grades, or helping anyone evade similarity or AI checks; and how we work explains the process step by step.

Please check us the same way you would check anyone else. If what you need is legitimate support, send us your brief and you will get a fixed quote, usually within one working day.

Frequently asked questions

Using legitimate support — editing, tutoring, statistics and methodology guidance — is legal and allowed by most universities. Submitting work someone else wrote as your own is misconduct everywhere, and in England, Australia and Ireland it is an offence to provide or advertise it.

Editing improves the language and clarity of text you wrote; the ideas, argument and words remain yours. Ghostwriting produces the text for you. Universities generally permit editing within their proofreading rules and treat ghostwriting as contract cheating.

It keeps you the author, publishes an integrity policy, names its experts, gives a fixed written quote before payment, has reviews on independent platforms, and never guarantees grades or "undetectable" work.

Yes. Supervision-style feedback, statistical analysis you understand and can report, methodology advice and proofreading are permitted almost everywhere. Check your department's policy on proofreading and acknowledge statistical support where it asks you to.

The best one for you is the one that passes the ten checks in this guide for the help you actually need. Be wary of rankings published by the companies themselves or by sites paid to list them — compare scope, people, written terms and independent reviews instead.
